How computers changed my writing habits
For a long time, I wrote in longhand with a pencil
I wrote my first book almost entirely between the hours of midnight and 3am, writing at the kitchen table in longhand and pencil.
For a long time that was the only way I wrote – and for a long time, too, I thought it was the only way I could write. But then (following a complaint from my seven-year old granddaughter) I got a laptop.
That woke me up. I discovered that using a laptop was a very enjoyable experience. For one thing, it became easier to write in a ‘stop and start’ fashion, writing one or two paragraphs, saving it, and then putting the whole thing away (much easier to do than if you’re working with pencil and paper). The laptop has likewise made this easier to work on several things at once (which is very useful to me as I do different kinds of writing).
But not everything changes. I still often find myself writing in the late evenings - and I still enjoy writing itself. What I can never really explain is why - there’s just something in it which I find fulfilling.
